"For nearly three decades, it has been known that homosexuality is not a mental illness. Medical and mental health professionals also now know that sexual orientation is not a choice and cannot be altered. Groups who try to change the sexual orientation of people through so-called conversion therapy are misguided and run the risk of causing a great deal of psychological harm to those they say they are trying to help."
-American Psychological Association
The therapists of New Perpective Counseling Services, PLLC fully support this statement made by the APA. We go to great lengths to create a positive and nonjudgmental environment, and will not feel uncomfortable discussing issues related to homosexuality or same-sex couples.
Dr. Elyse J. Deleski, LMFT has many years of experience working with gay and lesbian individuals, couples, and families. Her doctoral dissertation researched the division of household labor and parenting role distribution in gay fathering couples. Dr. Deleski has worked with both adolescents and adults to support and assist them with issues related to "coming out".
Dr. Deleski believes that same-sex couples' therapy should be treated no differently than heterosexual marital therapy, aside from the additional legal and social issues. Relationships between members of the same-sex are treated with the same legitimacy as any committed relationship. Additionally, Dr. Deleski has designed a pre-commitment counseling program for same sex couples seeking to take their relationship to the highest level of commitment.
